Maserati Multi 70 and Giovanni Soldini are sailing towards Malta, from where the 42nd edition of the Rolex Middle Sea Race will start, on Saturday October 23 . The race, organized by the Royal Ocean Racing Club, is held on a 606-mile course: the fleet sails around Sicily, passing north of Stromboli, West of Favignana and Pantelleria, and South of Lampedusa, before heading back to Valletta to the finish line.
For this edition of the regatta, 121 boats entered the challenge, 23 of which are Italian. In the multihulls division, Maserati Multi 70 will race against 15 multihulls, including two MOD 70s, Jason Carrol’s Argo (USA) and Riccardo Pavoncelli’s Mana (ITA), and Antoine Rabaste’s 80’ maxi trimaran Ultim’Emotion 2. Soldini and his Team will sail in classic MOD asset. «We agreed with Argo’s crew to both sail without the flying appendixes: the chances of having light wind are high, and the flying foils create more friction and slow us down. It’s going to be a nice challenge between MOD 70s with Argo and Mana and the fact that a sailing star such as Loick Peyron will race aboard our Italian competitor makes it even more exciting. Maserati Multi 70’s Team is back for their fourth time to the Rolex Middle Sea Race. The Italian crew, who participated in 2016, 2018 and 2020, conquered Line Honour in every edition and set the multihulls record, of 2 days, 1 hours, 25 minutes and 1 second, on their first participation. The race overall record is held by George David who, in 2007, finished the race in 1 day, 23 hours, 55 minutes and 3 seconds aboard maxi monohull Rambler.
