From this point of view we are lucky to be far to the East having chosen to cross the Equator close to the African coasts. If we had chosen differently we would have had to sail twice as many miles upwind, and now we would probably be at the same latitude but 1200 miles further West and, since we have to sail to Finisterre close to the coast, we would be in a bad position”
