Maserati Multi 70 and Giovanni Soldini are ready to set sail for the 42nd edition of the Rolex Middle Sea Race, organized by the Royal Ocean Racing Club, that counts 120 participants from more than 20 countries. The 6 competing multihulls will be the first to cross the starting line, in Grand Harbour, La Valletta, at 9 UTC, tomorrow Saturday October 23rd.
This morning between Stromboli and Messina, Giovanni Soldini and his crew – sailing aboard Maserati Multi 70 towards Malta to participate in the Rolex Middle Sea Race – met the volunteers from Sea Shepherd, the international non-profit marine conservation organization that defends wildlife and conserves and protects the oceans from illegal exploitation and environmental destruction.
Maserati Multi 70 and Giovanni Soldini are sailing towards Malta, from where the 42nd edition of the Rolex Middle Sea Race will start, on Saturday October 23 . The race, organized by the Royal Ocean Racing Club, is held on a 606-mile course: the fleet sails around Sicily, passing north of Stromboli, West of Favignana and Pantelleria, and South of Lampedusa, before heading back to Valletta to the finish line.
Maserati Multi 70 and Giovanni Soldini are forced to retire from the Rolex Fastnet Race due to damage aboard, occurred around 17.30 UTC (19.30 Italian time). Soldini said: «We were sailing at 20-25 knots when the winch drum exploded. We had just replaced it, it was new, it probably had some structural damage».
Giovanni Soldini and his Team set sail a little more than 5 hours ago and are now, at 15.30 UTC, between Guernsey and Saint Anne. At the moment the three maxi Ultim 32/23 are in the lead, and Maserati Multi 70 is following them right behind, with their rival Argo: it will be a nice hard fought race!

The Italian trimaran is racing with 15 multihulls, including Cyril Dardashti’s 105’ Ultim 32/23 Maxi Edmond De Rothschild, skippered by Franck Cammas and Charles Caudrelier, who set the multihulls record of the race in 2019 (1 day, 4 hours, 2 minutes and 26 seconds). Maserati Multi 70’s direct competitor is Jason Carrol’s MOD 70 Argo: among the crew is also Brian Thompson, one of the most experienced multihulls skipper who raced against Soldini in many occasions.
