The new Maserati Multi70 trimaran’s sporting schedule for 2016 was announced on June 29 to a high profile audience at an event hosted by the Yacht Club de Monaco and attended by Giovanni Soldini, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles chairman and challenge patron John Elkann and Pierre Casiraghi, all of whom will also be competing on the team.
Maserati and Giovanni Soldini’s ambition for the futuristic 21.2-metre multihull, which is the product of the MOD70 circuit, is to set a slew of new sporting records. In keeping with the Trident marque’s DNA, the aim will also be to turn Maserati Multi70 into a platform for hand-in-glove experimentation and technological innovation.
Flanking Giovanni Soldini once again in this three-hulled 2016 season, Maserati stays on as Main Sponsor for the fifth consecutive year, while UnipolSai Assicurazioni has signed up once again as co-sponsor but will play a more prominent role than last season.
Official suppliers to the new adventure are Ermenegildo Zegna on the clothing front and Boero Bartolomeo for hull paint and enamels.
“We are just beginning to discover Maserati Multi70’s potential. The passage from Lorient gave us our first taste and was very positive, educational experience,” commented Soldini. “This boat’s innovative character is entirely due to her appendages. Team Gitana transformed the starboard side with an L-foil and made her fly using two rudders and a foil but always in sheltered waters. We are now trying to see if it’s possible to fly in rough waters. This involves a lot of research and development work which we began almost as soon as the boat was in the water. We’re focusing on stability when she’s flying and on heading out into the ocean soon”.
