Despite lighter winds on the second half of the RORC Caribbean 600 Race slowing the progress of Maserati Multi70 against the race leading American MOD 70, Phaedo3, the Italian boat remains within striking distance of the lead this morning.
The Italian trimaran skippered by Giovanni Soldini passed the halfway stage in the 600-mile race around the Caribbean shortly before 05.00 this morning local time (10.00 in Italy). At that point Maserati Multi70 was just a few minutes behind Phaedo3.
Since then a reduction in wind strength has not suited Soldini’s foiling boat and enabled the American crew to slowly extend their lead.
At 09.00 (14.00 in Italy) the Maserati Multi70 trimaran was 13 miles off the lead, sailing at 17 knots.
«The first half of the race was in 13 to 15 knots of wind and we were competitive with the other guys», Soldini reported from his boat shortly before dawn this morning. «They are sailing very well and have not made any mistakes. The breeze is up and down and in every light spell they are able to extend a little on us. Now and then it comes up enough for us to make gains back on them. Generally the wind has been stronger than the forecast suggested so we are hoping this continues and we can get into some stronger winds that will suit our flying boat better».
