Maserati Multi 70 and Giovanni Soldini are forced to retire from the Rolex Fastnet Race due to damage aboard, occurred around 17.30 UTC (19.30 Italian time). Soldini said: «We were sailing at 20-25 knots when the winch drum exploded. We had just replaced it, it was new, it probably had some structural damage».
«We were doing well, Argo and us, our direct rival, were sailing so close to each other and until shortly before we were in the lead, it’s a pity that we had to retire. Now we’re heading to Cherbourg».
Maserati Multi 70, with 15 other multihulls, crossed the starting line of the 49th edition of the historical regatta, organized by the Royal Ocean Racing Club, at 10.10 UTC (12.10 Italian time), off Cowes (UK), with 24 knots of contrary wind.
