At 20.30 local time (18.30 UTC) Maserati Multi 70 was sailing off Augusta starboard tack. Giovanni Soldini and his crew decided to follow a more eastern route, in order to avoid the risk of finding light winds near the coast of Sicily.
A few hours later, at 01.00 on Sunday October 21st (23.00 of Saturday October 20th UTC), Maserati Multi 70 is back in the lead and is sailing at 8 knots off Acireale.
The causes of the rudder’s damage are still uncertain. “We really don’t think we had an impact” explains Giovanni Soldini, “we will have to conduct an accurate analysis with the designer Guillaume Verdier in order to understand the reason behind this damage.”
The crew is very happy about the trimaran’s performance sailing close-hauled, even with a lighter wind at around 12 knots.
“Now we have to quickly pass Messina and Stromboli” comments the skipper, “we will have a bit of a hard time for the beam reach board with strong winds between Lampedusa and Malta, but we still have a long way to go.”
